NACH KALIFORNIEN / LOS ANGELES

ORT: El Segundo / Südkalifornien ( 16.000 Einwohner Stadt im Großraum Los Angeles)
ZIEL: Verbesserung der englischen Sprache durch den Kontakt mit Gasteltern und -geschwistern und 14-tägiger Besuch der öffentlichen High School in El Segundo Erweiterung des kulturellen Horizonts durch Erleben und Erfahren des Alltagslebens (in der Gastfamilie und Schule) und Teilnahme an zahlreichen Veranstaltungen, wie:
- Coronation Dance, Homecoming Parade, Homecoming Football Game, Hallowe'en Parties und politische Ereignisse (Midterm Elections)
- Day trips in umliegende Orte und Städte: Beverly Hills, Hollywood, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Malibu City
- Strandausflüge
- Erkunden der weiteren Umgebuhng: Santa Monica Mountains, Mulholland Drive, Josuah Tree National Park
- Besichtigung von Bildungsinstitutionen: Paul Getty Museum, University of California / Los Angeles, Pepperdine University
- Besuch von Vergnügungsparks: Universal Studios, Disney Land
INFORMATION: im Rahmen der Vorbereitung, des Aufenthaltes und der Nachbereitung dieser Reise in die USA wurden einige Schulprojekte erarbeitet - selbstverständlich durchwegs in englischer Sprache
- Verfassen eines Tagebuches
- Vorbereiten und Erarbeiten eines Projektes zum 'American School System' unter Berücksichtigung des eigenen Erfahrungshorizonts und einem Vergleich zum Österreichischen Schulsystem (Einzelarbeit / Umfang rund 8-10 Seiten)
- Vorbereiten und Erarbeiten einer Projektarbeit zu speziellen Aspekten zum Thema USA auf Basis von Internet Recherche, durchgeführten und kommentierten Interviews in Kalifornien und eigenen Erfahrungen (Teamarbeit / Umfang rund 15 Seiten)
- Verfassen eines Resümees unmittelbar nach unserer Rückkehr aus den USA
- Zusammenstellen einer kommentierten Foto-Powerpoint Präsentation und Vorstellen der Projektarbeiten (in englischer Sprache) für den Elternabend am 29. November 2010
Impressions
My impression of the school is a bit different. I think our school system as as well as their system has advantages and disadvantages, though I like our system better. I think it gets quite boring, if you have only five subjects in a school year, like my host-sister. (Sarah Grone)
The first day at El Segundo High was another great experience: I made friends easily and developed some very thorough friendships over the weeks. Fortunately, the language was no barrier. After just a few days, I actually was one of them. My participation in all their activities, especially the float building, was greatly appreciated. I really enjoyed the Americans' approach to everything they do: They seem to enjoy every moment of their life. They aren't afraid of challenges and if they fail, they don't give up. Instead, they focus on the positive side of their failure: They try to figure out what went wrong and after the lesson was learned, they try it again and if necessary, again and again. On the trip I discovered that Americans have a completely different culture and a different mentality from us Europeans. After two weeks in the States I figured out that America is just simply not the right country for me.
The thing that bothers me is that American teenagers are completely stripped off their rights in comparison to us Austrians, I just think that we develop a certain responsibility much earlier than they do.
